    Gun vault suggestions

I'm tired of my old vets being cooped up in safes all the time. That and all the stuff I have accumulated over the years that is just stuffed in boxes isn't being appreciated like it should be. I have been thinking about turning an extra bedroom into a display/vault room. I'm looking for suggestions about what all to do with it as far as security and fire resistance that won't break the bank. I need ideas like what others have done that worked well or didn't work and what kind of door others have used. I would even kinda like to hear what your fantasy vault would be like. Mine would probably start out as big as my house with a browning m2 setting right in the middle or perhaps an civil war cannon or maybe both. But then where would the gattling gun go. O well back to the drawing board.

If you are looking for both security and fire protection, there isn't much way to retrofit a regular room. Have a friend that built a security vault when he built his house. His security room is inside the house, but was done with one concrete pour, floor, walls, and ceiling all at the same time. I think he even got a tax break on calling it a storm shelter.

I have seriously been considering picking up a 60 foot trailer from a tractor rig and covering it with a layer of reinforced concrete.

I have at least 800 square feet of my house dedicated to my hobby. There is just way to much of it and some of the area is looking like a hoarders dump site.

When you start collecting and it goes on for 45 years, it's amazing how much stuff you pick up. Not only that but people that want to get rid of their stuff or give it to you when a spouse passes on add to the piles. They don't want to toss it out or turn it in etc so they give it to someone that truly appreciates it.

Often, I offer to sell it off for them.

Anyway, the trailer would only have been a space to store the stuff not so collectable. As for a display room, you need to be extremely selective as to what you're going to put into it. The contents of one box can easily take up a whole 16 foot wall from floor to ceiling, depending on the size of the box and what it contains.

In the end, I have finally decided to downsize a bit, get rid of the doubles and triples etc. That still won't give me enough space to display. Another problem, anything made of metal, has to be kept warm in the winter or it not only might but will rust when it warms up enough to make it sweat.

Then there is the space required to store all of the components to handload for the stuff that has rare or almost non existent cases and the casting equipment for specific bullets for those cases. Then safe powder storage containers. The list goes on and on.

I vistited a friend that felt the room he had set aside in his basement was big enough to allow him to safely store and display. His bayonets alone took up one small wall. He finally made up a peg board display rack with pages like a book. He mounted the bayos on both sides of the reinforced 6 foot x 4 foot pages and conserved a lot of space.

The walls are high enough that he can disply most of his long guns in two high x three deep racks. Then there came the special pistol display area and the ammo area as well as the accessory area etc. The room, is 20 feet x 44 feet. It is finished on the inside with expanded metal plates and covered with particle board. The outside walls are concrete on three sides and the wall that is finished on the outside, is similar to the inside walls. There is a heavy steel safe door, that he picked up from a bank that was being torn down. Complete, right down to the electrical and mechanical locks. It's made out of Chrome Vanadium. He got it for taking it out of the building and hauling it away.

It all really depends on how much you have and to what lengths you want to go to. Whatever, there is no cheap way to do it.

This may not be so much an answer, as much as it is an idea to help get you thinking.
