    This newspaper clipping was included in a scrapbook in the Born collection. It is Joseph Rosenthal's Gung-Ho photograph taken atop Mt. Suribachi after the famous flag raising. Many of the men in the photograph are identified.

    The famous flag-raising photo is sometimes accused of being posed because when Rosenthal was asked, he thought the question was directed at this one and said Yes. The biggie, of course, was not.

    I had a neighbor named Ted Folari who was in the squad that raised the first flag. When the second photo was taken he was just off the crest guarding the perimeter, but he watched it go up from about 40 yards away. He gave me the M1icon (not a Garand) that he carried. Don't ask.
