Arisaka Sporter

[Salt Flat]

This is a Type 38 Arisaka that I built from left over parts. (No collector rifles were injured). The stock, target barrel, and bolt were gunshow finds. The stock is a Bishop that was unfinished when I got it. I sanded and sanded some more and then finished it with some BLO (looks like it needs a little more in the pictures). The bolt already had a nice knurled handle expertly welded on and polished. I experiment with scope mounts sometimes and I machined up the bases as shown. I chambered it for .308. Fitting a barrel to an Arisaka is somewhat complicated and takes a lot more time than a Mauser or Springfield. I really haven't done any refinishing of the bluing at this point, maybe down the road I'll tackle that.

Ought to make a nice deer rifle if it shoots half as good as it looks.Like the satin finish on the stock.

I passed on a sporterized Arisaka that I saw at a Gunshow. The price was under $100.00. It was sooo modified, I didn't see any collector value. However, I have heard good things about the strength of the receiver. So I really should grab 1 or 2 sporterized models, just for grins and giggles.

Gentlemen, Thanks for the comments. The Type 38 actions work much better than the Type 99's for sporters. They have a machined trigger guard and are finshed better. Also you would need a metric lathe to cut the barrel threads for a Type 99. Most lathes in the US are not metric. There is nothing wrong with the 7.7 caliber though and usually the T99 bores are very good due to the chrome bores. I've got a cut down Type 99 barreld action with a Lyman micrometer peep sight and a ramp front that I'm saving for the right stock. I've been looking at Richards Microfit stocks and may order one with some good grain. Has anyone bought from them? Salt Flat
