IHC barrel date
Does this rifle have the original barrel? I would like to bid on it but I'm not 100% sure. Most of the barrel dates from that serial range are 53 but there is a couple of 54's.

I would think that that rifle was built up around July or Aug, 1954. According to information from Wayne Bradford, of barrel dates in the 4569xxx range, 15 of 29 rifles in his data base have 1-54 dated barrels. In Scott Duff's article " Barrel Usage on New M1 Rifle Production 1952 - 1957, Part 2, IHC" Scott lists 4557091 with a 12-53, 4558579 with a 1-54 barrel, 4576647 with 12-53, 4583435 with 2-54 and 4619654 also with a 2-54.
Looks to me like there is no problem with either the barrel date or stock date on that rifle.
Did you ask if there are any Import markings ? No pictures of areas you would find them. Real nice looking rifle otherwise.

I sent the seller a message earlier today and I asked him where he got it and I told him I was going to do a little checking because I wasn't positive of the barrel date. Here is what he sent back to me in his exact words. "Thank you I was there when the gun was built but you must have. I would want you to get injured shooting it at your age. You must be in your 90 so I will disregard your bid." I wonder if the guy isn't a little touched.

A "little touched" ?? Sounds to me he is full blown touched. He has only 1 sale and 5 or 6 buys but feedback seems OK. Guess he doesn't like any questions. We will see. I just sent him a question regarding import marks.

Thanks Joe. I sent a message and said I didn't quite understand his last transmission and would like to know if he would sell me the rifle or not. His reply, "You seem to know everything why don't you keep it yourself". I don't know if I've ever been banned from buying something before, I think my feelings are hurt.

The guy is strange. Doesn't even make much sense. I think I would be a bit worried dealing with him.

I think that the word you are looking for is "arrogant".
Not 1 good photo of the stock. I would have to assume that it has been sanded, lacking good photos showing that it is NOT sanded. Add his AS IS policy, thank you, no, I would not have been interested.

Well, we are going to find out because I used a friends GB account and bought it. You guys are making me nervous. I do notice that the rear sight seems to have the NM aperature. I have a strange feeling it is going to be a very nice rifle. After I get it should I tell him it was me or do you think as wierd as he is he might hang himself in the basement.

Does look to be a NM aperture but thats OK. It's worth more than a standard aperture. I too have a feeling it will be a nice rifle. Lets hope so. Good luck.
