My first Mosin, '44 Tula with '41 SVT PU

Well the new rifle came in the mail yesterday. Its a '44 Tula with a '41 SVT 40 PU. Rifle is in beautiful shape! Has a bright shiny bore, bolt is nice and smooth, and trigger pull is reasonably light and very smooth, but has the usual half mile of creep. It unfortunately has a post WWII stock on it, but the scope is war dated so in my eyes that makes up for it. The rest they had were post war scopes with either WWII stocks or post war as well.

Everything else is the same as everyone else's, floorplate is matched to the rifle and everything else matches, scope serial is electro penciled on bracket with the rifle serial etc.

Waiting on some PRVI brass, Lee dies and some 150gr Hornady flat based bullets and then off to the range.

Does anyone have a good recipe for these bullets over IMR 4895? What weight bullet were they meant to use?

    Thanks!

I'll post a range report as soon as my dies and brass get here, probably two weekends from now. Can't wait!

Sweet looking PU. The scope should have the letters CB on the elevation knob - that designates that the dials were swapped to reflect the 91/30 characteristics. I reload but use Varget for my powder - it is very heat stable which is a must for 91/30s. I look forward to the range report!!

I use varget in my .223 so I have a fair bit on hand at all times, thanks for the advice!

My match load uses 174gn .311 Sierra Match King bullets and 43.5gns of Varget. I've used both Winchester and Tula primers. My match partner moved up to 45gns of Varget and seems to have better results at 800 and 1000 yards, especially with some wind so I'm going to work my way up and see ig my match rifles can handle the higher powder load without pressure issues.

Sounds good Devious6. What are your thoughts on 150 or 180gr flat base bullets in these?

The CB is present on the elevation turret, just as you said it would be

I think that you'll find that just about every Mosin will have its "favorite" flavor of bullet shape, size, weight combination. Most of my serious shooting with my PU is match related - prep, practice and matches. The 174 gn HPBT or round nose seem to perform the best in my rifles - and in my match partners. In reality, though, if you just want decent results, you'll find that MILSURP can perform pretty well, sometimes out to 600 yards depending on the type and rifle. For me, though, I'm sticking with the 174s until someone shows me better results at 800 and 1000 yards.

I must say that has the prettiest wood I've ever seen on any Russianicon rifle. Sweet!

My '43 Tula has that same dark coloring - it does add some additional beauty to the rifle, I think.
