Those are the incorrect grips for a Colt 1911A1 of that period. Should be large ring Colt plastic grips, if you want it period correct. The diamond checkered wood grips were last used in 1919.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. You really lucked out. What amazes me is the slide and frame is 1 number off?
Or am I not seeing that correctly on my iPhone.
If so I can't believe that would happen while the GI's where cleaning them.
More like mixed up when assembled as they should have been right next to each other.
I have a mismatched colt that has a 2000+ separation. That to me seems normal.
    What do the experts think?

Colt numbered the slides for a reason, and you can bet it was not mixed up at Colt. It is more unusual to find the slides numbers way off than the usual close. One of the most beautiful 1937 1911A1's I have ever seen was only one number off.

You are correct on the grips. For some reason I was thinking your pistol was in the 830,000 range. Senior moment I suppose.

    Barrel Markings

The weapon discussed (Ser No 736,xxx) as stated has what many think is a older barrel. It is marked with an interlaced HP and also has a small G in front of the lugs. see pics

The only thing I would do is replace the grips with USGI plastic --- but not for $125! You should be able to find them on Gunbroker for $30-40.
