Serial number for 1916 Enfield manufactured Mk III*

    Hello Enfield friends......

I have an SMLE Mk III* manufactured at Enfield in 1916......as per the receiver markings.
It has a 5 digit serial number "K 23XXX" which appears on receiver, barrel, bolt, nosecap and inside the stock.

I have been reading Charles Stratton's book " SMLE (No 1) RIFLES Mk I and Mk III.....where on page 23 he writes that no 5 digit serial numbers are found on Enfield manufactured rifles. That serial numbers on Enfield manufactured rifle was limited to 4 digits with letter codes changing every 9,999 rifles.

Is there any truth/documentation to this that any of you are aware of?

    Thnaks for your replies.

    Jason
