    1903 Sporter

I recently bought a Springfield 1903 sporter in very good condition. It has some traits of an NRA sporter such as star gauged barrel, 6-24 date with bomb, Lyman 48 sight, no signs of where rear sight was mounted. Though the stock is checkered very nicely has a Schnabel and does not have a barrel band though front sling swivel does screw into a band that floats around the barrel through the stock. Serial number is 1264948
Any help on the history of this rifle would be greatly appreciated.

Very nicely done '03. You will need an SRS check on the SN.

A hit - SRS records it as an NRA Sporter sold in 1924. It has been modified. The pictures are sort of small, so hard to see too much detail. A new stock, at least, was added. These rifles were made with Lyman rear sights and did not have a military rear sight. You might look on the bottom of the bolt body and there should be an etched serial number that should match.

I disagree with Rick on the stock. I would say it is a very nicely modified original NRA Sporter stock. I say this because it has the crossbolts, the 1922 buttplate and I believe I can see a filled hole in the fore end where the barrel band retaining pin was removed. About the only 1903 NRA Sporter I like better than one in the original configuration and finish is a nicely customized one, as is #1264948. Congratulations to 86Krag on the find.

Additional; SA didn't start numbering bolts to the rifles until about the end of 1924. As this one was sold on 9-23-24 I doubt that the bolt will have the rifle sn on it.

Thank you very much for the help. The stock does have a filled hole where the cross pin would have been. Also I couldn't find any serial number on the bolt. Also if anyone has an idea of an approximate value of the rifle that would be greatly appreciated to see how I did on the purchase.
    Thank you

Herschel could well be right - modified pretty heavily, that's for sure!

Nice looking rifle, it would help to see BIGGER pictures along the lines of your first picture. Also please take one of the bottom of the checkering on both the forend and pistol grip.

You guys are sure lucky to be able to find those around you. What a beauty! We don't see ANY of them up here. The closest I saw was a Kragicon that was possibly an NRA but had no papers, so it sold as a shooter. I still didn't get that one...

I know a man...that's the sort of thing he owned. He loved guns with real class and value. It may have come from him. Still, very scarce. When one shows it's self, it disappears again for another lifetime.
