I've seen footage in RVN in the early days of Colt, with the marines using ARs with standard cocking handles and chrome carriers...would these have been the early AR 15/M16 marked rifles?

I believe so. I have a very good friend, Jerry Crissman, who was in Vietnam in the early days and he carried an M14. He told me he was issued a new rifle to take the place of his M14. That rifle, he said, was an AR15 with "puke colored" furniture. He said he had it for less than week or two before he was ordered to turn it in and was given his M14 back. He said it was a "jam-o-matic" and had caused a few of his fellow Marines to get wounded. His said a few months later he was issued an M16 and didn't remember any significant issues with it.

Friend bought one shortly before the recent unplesantness for about $1200.00. I think he got a brother in law price. Came with a hard sided fitted case/instruction manual/cleaning kit etc.. I have first right of refusal when he needs $$ again. Nice rifle with upside potential as an investment.

Fellas, the best I can come up with is that an SP1 6001 this late should have a notched bolt however, from all I can find and have read, this is not a 100% benchmark. Slick bolts have been noted as scattered throughout production of the 6001.

Well, guys, an update on my model 6001. It should arrive here tomorrow and when I get it I will photo document it throughout and post a new thread. Can't wait!

I was getting a tad nervous as the seller fell off the planet for a few days, he told me the check cleared and he had received the FFL then nothing. When he did contact me he told me he had made a mistake and the check hadn't cleared and he couldn't print the FFL. ARG!!! I had the shop resend the FFL and called my bank to check the status of the certified check I sent. It had cleared three days before and funds had been released. BIGGER ARG!!! I called the seller and he said the check had indeed cleared and he would send the carbine. I received an email yesterday with a tracking number and it will be here tomorrow! WHEW!!!
