Where did the Canadian L-B's go

Having luinch today with some of the old and bold and was told that the Canadian Army/Defence Dept disposed of vast stocks of the C1/L1A1 rifles to India. Is this true?

It certainly goes against my understanding of their disposal policy. Additionally, within a few years of the UKicon/Canadaicon/Aust disposing of our L1A1's and re-arming with 5.56, so did India - rather defeating the object of buying them.

Any answers out there in Forumland?

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Never heard that before...all I've ever heard is that all the Canadian Forces' C1s and C2s were dropped in the shredder in the 90s. (Including 50,000 rifles rebuilt by Colt Canada and put into war reserve.)

The only C1A1s that survived to my knowledge were the Ontario Provincial Police rifles (which initially went to Britainicon, then came back to the Canadian civil market), those rifles that were sold directly by Longbranch to competitive shooters up until the plant closed in 1976, and those various black-market rifles that "fell off the truck" into civvie hands over the years.

And, of course, those recreated by us colonial savages (often at great effort and expense ) from Canadian parts sold off as surplus.

He's right Peter, the FNs went into the shredder. These people would never let a rifle like that fall into "Unauthorized" hands...

Thanks for that chaps. Can you ever imagine a civilised Nation allowing their honest and law abiding citizens having self loaders?

The US came awful close with the M14M project in the 1960s...Defense Department objections (because the necessary mods would render the rifles incapable of ready restoration to military specs) and the 1968 Gun Control Act put the end to it.

Best not to Pete. After all, they are far more deadly in the Hands of Law Abiding, Tax Paying Citizens. & might cause far more problems them being in the Minority in this wonderfull country of ours! It's far better to let Drug dealing Barons with unlicenced Full Auto Weapons, Drunk drivers moving deadly steel cages about on roads. & Drug Dealers ply their evil trade & ruin lives universally. Rather than concentrate Policing efforts & Government resources on Sensible Law Enforcement. It's a LOT easier to target minority groups like shooters. Who in the eyes of our Eminnetly Sensible politiicans, will make themselves look better strangling any sort of potential future 'Threat' (In THIER Eyes!) towards themselves & their goal of establishing a Police State. Even though the FACTS on paper, prove that armed crime in this country is VERY Low indeed!........But the other aforementioned Crime topics. Require FAR Too many manpower resources to deal with it. Than we have available. Financial cuts Etc, Oh DONT get me going up THAT route!!!...............We would be going off topic, & going all Political! and that would NEVER do!!..........

Reportedly Can Forces kept about 400 C1s as museum pieces and for familiarisation training, rest were destroyed in 2007 cause "they were getting rusty in storage". They were cocooned and should have been good for decades.

Clever quip in our national newspapers this weekend about Bitain becoming/trying the worlds policeman. We can't keep the streets of Manchester free of guns, what hope is there for the Middle East! Like they say.... Never a truer word spoken in jest!
