    4198 Powder W/175 Gr Jacketed

I know this is too fast a powder for anything normal velocity in 30-06, but with the powder shortage and a chance to get some for a low load use, does anyone have any experience with it?

I know its ok for lead pills but I don't shoot lead, just 175 gr target bullets.

Its only 100 yard maximum so no need for velocity and often just at 50 yards.

I would want it as accurate as 4831 but not the least concerned how fast it goes as long as its accurate.

I don't want to use fillers as its just a bridge powder so question is would it ignite ok as I know it would be a pretty low case volume.

It's simple, if the powder manufacturer doesn't have a recommendation for it, don't do it. Get the book or study the info produced by the people that know. Second hand or memorized info isn't worth your eyesight or possible injury. Cartridge Loads - Hodgdon Reloading Data Center - data.hodgdon.com

This site has all the info. Just follow through...you haven't said whether you're talking 4198 IMR or H...that's the first thing. They don't list it at all. That should tell you enough. Watch and shoot...

With all due respect, I would appreciate it if the response either addresses the question or stay silent, in which case there is no response needed.

    Thank you

IMR's old data booklets listed a wide range of powders, but were a bit stingy with bullet weights. Here's some of the data for .30/06 with 150 and 200 grain bullets - note that they are "maximum" loads and pressures are copper crusher style. For a 175 grain bullet, split the difference - expecting 37 grains to give about 2440 fps at "max" pressure.

    .30-06
REM. CASE; REM. 9 1/2 PR
    REM. 150 GR. PTD. SPCL
    .308" DIA.; 23" BBL.; 3.200" C.O.L.
    Powder Charge Vel. C.U.P
    IMR 4198 38.0 2600 50000

    .30-06
REM. CASE; REM. 9 1/2 PR
SIERRA 200 GR. MATCH KING HP
    .308" DIA.; 23" BBL.; 3.340" C.O.L.
    IMR 4198 36.0 2285 48400

QuickLOAD gives the following estimates with 4198 -
    Cartridge : .30-06 Spring.
    Bullet : .308, 175, Sierra HPBT MatchK 2275
    Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.340 inch or 84.84 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch or 609.6 mm
    Powder : IMR 4198

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 2.0% of nominal charge.

Not the optimum powder for the '06 case, but certainly no reason it won't work OK in moderate doses.

OK, that's IMR, but does he have that or H 4198...? He hasn't clarified.

And while the burn rates are so close as to be realistically irrelevant, it is IMR
