    M-1 trigger guard configuration

I have 4 Garands;2 of WWII vintage and 2 of the Korean era. The trigger guards are different- the older ones have a projection (flange?) at the rear of the loop. Was this appendage put there to facilitate opening the trigger guard for further disassembling and if so was the small hole designed to have a bullet nose or section of a cleaning rod inserted to gain leverage? Or is the small hole intended for use with the so-called "winter trigger" that enabled the shooter to fire the weapon with a mitten/glove on the hand. If so then how did the "winter trigger" device get attached to the Garands of later manufacture (IHC and H&R)? Thanx for any info. J. Cooper

The later winter triggers were screwed to the small of the pistol grip.
