You will notice that the fold down flap has a short length of webbing strap stitched to it (when folded to the front of the case as in your picture 2)
This flap needs to be folded tightly down so that that the straps that go around the outside of case are positioned over the web strap stitched to the flap.
The brass buckle on the LH strap should be looped over the brass loop on the RH strap and the webbing tab on the LH strap fed through the exposed brass loop to retain it.

I'm not sure if this makes sense?

It is a real pig to do - and I'm not surprised that the few pictures that you see of these cases in action show these straps left open!

Thanks gentlemen, the instructions and the photo did it. It is not easy as mentioned, especially with mine, as the canvas of the cover must have shrunk as in closing the cover flap it didn't pull down as far as the one in the photo and the closing strap had to fit over the strip of canvas along the edge of the flap making it harder to secure the strap. Not the best method/design for securing the flap, I think the closing strap should have been located a little higher up on the flap. But at least I was able to do it. Ray
