Yep, you are correct but it could be made correct very easily and even if it stays 30-06 what is wrong with making it as complete of a rifle as possible? We can only guess as to when and where the conversion was done and I put all my rifles back to as close to complete as possible. Who knows, maybe there was a cottage industry in Japanicon cranking out 06 Type 99s for occupying forces to take home. We'll never know for sure.

MT, Before you replace the barrel , check to see if the feed rails have been modified (opened up). If they have been modified it probably wouldn't be good to try to rebarrel back to 7.7. It wouldn't feed correctly and there is no practical way to repair the rails. Salt Flat

Plus since one like that isn't in full military specs being it's not the original caliber I would just look at it and keep walking on
I think your friend's rifle had something done to the trigger for it fire and the locking lugs slipping. Normally, these rifle will not fire unless the bolt handle is in full closed position. There is a lever on the trigger that prevents firing if the bolt is not in closed. Good thing is your friend's head wasn't behind the bolt.

The arisaka 99's chamber and receivers are the strongest mil-surp actions out there , many test were done after and during ww2 to intentionaly blow them up , they were shocked to find out they could not blow one up even when filling case to capacity, Thats why i chose an old one to convert myself that had missing parts and mum,i call it my long range 99, i load very hot handloads up to 175 grain for it and it eats it all day long with astounding accuracy for such a simply designed rifle, up until the last ditch rifles , they were known to be the strongest action out there even more so than the k98and springfeilds , long as the head space was set correctly you can fire 06 in it all day long and will never have a problem, checking headspace is easy if you make a dummy round , take the bolt apart and use just the bolt handle, put a small peice of tape over case rear where primer would set, then slowly try to close bolt , if it goes right in all the way you have excessive headspace , should be a small gap between bolt handle and receiver when trying to close bolt and should need forced into closed position , if it is nice and tight with small gap you have good headspace , it falls in and is sloppy , you have a problem and should not fire , have a gunsmith use a go no go gauge before firing , you wont blow an arisaka up , but may scare hell outta you .BEST TO HAVE ANY CONVERSION RIFLE CHECKED WELL BEFORE FIRING.looks nice tho, lotta nice petina going on .Get her checked out my man not worth the risk of losing an eye or few fingers.or sled it and longggggg piece of string on trigger lol. hope that helps.BTW that a spanish mauser you have sitting in the sled on bench? model 1916?nice rifle.

oh and btw , they have that gas relief hole in top of chamber for a reason , another reason why its almost impossible to blow up an early type 99, most all the extra presuure gets spit out by going through that hole, i notice on my hotter loaded rounds i have a small puff out that gas hole at times. I think she will be fine , still best if you have not fired it yet to get it checked, just not worth the risk.

Magazine feeding is always an problem unless the bullets are deep seated. As a single shot no sweat. My friend has one and he shoots 0.312-06 in it. We were hitting silhouette turkeys at 375 Meters with deep seated 150s without any issues
