1903 Originality

Recently purcased a 1903 Springfield serial number 1289031 which dates the receiver to the latter part of 1928. The weapon has a S.A. barrel dated 1-29. Could this be the original barrel? Can I shoot the gun providing it checks out? Thanks!

The cut off date is much earlier for the single heat treated receivers. 800,000? I think? That one will be fine if it checks out for headspace.

Try Vi Shooter site. 1928/29 was an interesting time at Springfield. Your date on 1/29 is right in range. Also note the serial number is right in range for RIA made receivers with SA serial range. They are rare. Can you spot one? Try a few photos of the bottom of the receiver, make it grease free.

Well, I said I purchased the weapon but I have not received it yet. What should I be looking for on the bottom of the receiver? I will post some pics when I receive the weapon. Thanks.

Keep in mind that by that time, most rifles were "put-togethers" and the receiver/barrel match wasn't as close as it was later. I would say the barrel is probably a match.

There is an outside chance the receiver may have been one of those sent to Springfield from Rock Island. When you get the rifle, look at see if there is a small "o" below the serial number.

Your rifle is considerably above the "cut-off" for receiver problems. As was suggested, get the headspace checked and if the rifle is mechanically sound, you should be good to go.
