Webley Mark VI and Mark IV

Here are a couple of photos of my Webleys. I believe the Mark IV is dated 1944, but I do not know how to date the Mark VI.

Yes, it has been shaved. I have moon clips. I have a S&W revolver in .45acp , but I will probably try to find or reload some .455 rounds.

how are you dating your mkIV to 1944 ? just wondering , as you did not show many photos , but i dont see the "war finish" stamping on the right frame above and in front of the trigger guard ,

the mkVI is normally marked on the left frame above the trigger the date is generally there , here is mine as an example -

Your MkVI is dated 1917 on the action and on the barrel.

The Mk IV was dated by a helpful person on another forum about a year or so ago. If I can find the thread I will link it. Otherwise, I do not know how to date it. It does have "War Finish" on it.

I was unsure on the MkVI of the date. I did not know if the 1917 related to the year of the patent or the year of the arm's manufacture. Thank you for clearing that up.

webley prided itself on its finish of commercial weapons in that period they had to forgo some of those efforts to produce the required pieces so they marked them as a lesser finish grade , ive not seen any marked as his is but i learned long ago not to say 'never or always' when it comes to the pieces i collect , mine is marked on the other side ,

my enfield mkVI is marked on the opposite side as the webley mkVI -

Wow, so basically a pride thing.! They wanted you to know they COULD do better but because of the war they had to reduce their standards. Only in the western world would that enter our minds.

We did the same thing , Reminton model 11 s come to mind.
The owners of the commercial firms had to forgo some polishing steps to meet costs or production rates and did not want thier future customer base to think the finish they saw was normal .
