Mosin 1938 Carbine all matching

I was had a table at the gun show in Plymouth and when killing some time at the end of the day came across this all matching Mosin, it hadn't sold as they were asking a lot of money for it, but I have rarely seen an 1938 and just had to have it to go with my M44 and 3 98's
They got me $360 for it, but I like it.

Ben: I know nothing about these M38's although I have one presently wending it's way to me via Canada Post. That's a beautiful rifle you have there- I would have payed what you did in a heartbeat. The stock is interesting- is it a laminate? The last photo, in particular looks like laminate?

I took a look at it and compared it to my M44 and it is definitely a laminate stock. In reading the Mosin book after the war most of them were arsenal refinished and many were fitted with laminate stocks.

Are you sure about the laminate? Laminates show very distinct layers, especially on the sides of the shoulder stock because of the shaping required. Looking at your pix 1, I don't see the striations. I think I see wood ring grain patterns in the other pix. I could be wrong, but see the laminated MN at J&G and compare:

I have a 1942 Isshy also (the arrow in the triangle mark indicates a post 1938 Ishy make, pix 2), all matching, been refurbed so that the exterior is in excellent condition. Yours also appears to be a 1942.I Bought it in 2002, back then they went for $100, including shipping.

I also own 3 M-44s: Russian(1946), Polish (1952) and Romanian (1956). Only the Romania has patina metal, the other two are refurbed and in excellent external condition. Also have a 91/30 (1927). All bought in 2001-2003 when they were dirt cheap. All matching and bores look pretty good.

I know it is heresy (to some Milsurp guys) to say this, but I am converting my 1938 to a scout configuration with a Boyd Stock, Timney trigger and scout mount and scope. No non-reversible mods and I will keep the original stock and sling. The Boyd stock and the scout scope and mount allow for the use of the original straight bolt, so no bending of the handle needed.

The above IZHEVSK receiver is without a doubt bedded in a laminate stock.

If your going to bubba your rifle up go the hole nine yards and paint it camo with rattle cans,, Then it'll be really tacticool.....

To my eye when looking at the butt of the gun, the striations look awfully uniform for natural wood

Doesn't really matter to me one way or the other although it is interest to know
