Servicing Binos and Scout Regiment Telescope

Gentlemen,

Could anyone direct me to a reputable company or chap who is able to service/clean a set of British Army WW2 binoculars and a Scout Regiment Telescope.

I am happy to send these to the UK.

Both are in relatively good condition but have accumulated about 70 years worth of dust.

The Sct Reg Scope really is just a careful DIY job. As I remember, you can only insert one lens in the wrong way and that's the OG. Packing glands were a bit of a pain...., no a XXXXXXX pain but if you want to re-pack I'll send you some.

Binos......... Mmmmmmm They are a real handfull if you ain't done 'em before and I suggest reading the article again - and again. 10BA locking grub screws, large diameter but soooooo fine threads into a partial circumference of crap wartime sintered alloy just waiting to trap the unwary. Easily cross threaded threads and once you've crossed them, they a) ain't going back and b) you'll never collimate again.

There MUST be a repair facility in Oz because we used to use pommy No2 Binos

Like Peter says here, I've worked on both before...all the extreme fine thread is mesmerizing, and if you bugger one up, you're hooped. This is a self serve with care...nothing like a set of bino's out of parallax...leaves you cross eyed and no one will buy them.

Andrew, you never stated what bino's you have ? WW2 british does cover a few makes types etc, some easier than others to get apart, is it definitely a clean they need or is it a breakdown of the balsam ?

As Peter pointed out regarding the screws, are your Bino,s in good condition to start with, only ask as that in some cases its worth buying another pair, I,ve bought a few from ebay, for spares but turn out to be better than the original pair and only required the most common repair, ( if you can call tightening 3 grub screws a repair)

Ebay has plenty and can be had for the cost of a few pints.

The problem with ebay buys is what definition the seller puts on the work 'clean'. We used a light screen to quantify light IN and same - or lack of - light OUT. Same as used on most other optical kit. THIS is what defines clean or clear optics. As for sellers descriptions of collimation........... words fail me!

I,ve been lucky so far as I look for the ones with the description spares or repair, but have also had a few good pairs and were as described.

Andrew, there's a set of instructions at the link here for maintaining a Telescope, Scout Regiment. A bit harder to find than some, but if you scan through the articles in the MKL there are a couple on binoculars as well.
