You did well..............unless it's busted.
Can't figure parts are going to be easy to get. But then again, I never checked. I don't have a busted Hakim.
I do seem to recall something about the shims you mentioned, if that is what it is, it should be an easy fix.
The correct sling by the way is a bright green canvas/nylon sling. It will make it really stand out.

That's the one.
Don't shoot Turk ammo in it once you get it working. You need a gas port adjustment tool as it is supposed to through the emptys between 6-10 ft. If more than that you could break something.

Ok I think I found the issue but not certain of the cause. 89 (saftey shaft) is not playing well with 100(trigger block). The recess in the saftey shaft is supposed to let the trigger block pass thru the notch in the saftey shaft base but the shaft will not rotate clockwise sufficent for clearance. Saftey turns fine off the reciever but not when inserted there appears to be a slot running horizonally in 106 on the left side above the trigger guard in front of the rear action screw that allows for the free movement of the saftey shaft. I think it is either blocked or not in the proper relationship (on the vertical axis) with the slotted disk at the bottom of the saftey shaft as the saftey will not move full right (safe) or full left (fire). Any thoughts?
In retrospect perhaps I should have posted in the gunsmith section rather than hijacking Aragorns thread.

Is it installed backwards or bent?

I think my decribing the problem helped me figure it out. Tightning of the rear action screw brought the disk at the base of the saftey shaft into the correct relationship with the slot in the trigger guars assembly allowing it t0 rotate properly engageing/disengaging the trigger stop.

Seems to me to be a weak spot in the design. The action screw is not completely tight. At some point I will break it down and check the condition of the shims which I read can be an issue. Seems to me if the trigger guard and the action are not heald in the correct relationship by shims this could be a recurring problem. I supose that is why the action screws have the wire keepers. Thanks for letting me hyjack the thread to bounce this around. Perhaps it will help someone else down the road.

One more question. Has anyone made a gas adjustment tool for a Hakim? I would rather make one than pay $20 on ebay. Ideas?

Round piece of metal, a dremel and a lot of patience is all that comes to mind. I don't know how big it has to be but a brass bolt turned down and smoothed out would be easier to work with than steel I would think.

Or perhaps a Harbor Freight $1 nut driver and a dremel?
