    24XXX Serial Number

I have part of an old project gun. I think my uncle started the project many years ago. He passed away before completion. It is a Rock Island 03' Springfield, Ser. # 24XXX. Receiver and bolt seem to be in fair shape, the barrel has some surface rust, bore condition is unknown at this time, the stock has been modified as if the intent was to make a sporter out of it. Missing trigger guard & floor plate. No rear sight & collar.
Any chance this thing is worth fooling with or should it become a piece over the fireplace?

You could find all the parts to restore it but it is not practical. The parts have become very expensive. In a strange twist of economics we see many good milsurps being broken down and the parts sold off on EBAY. (Ethically this is just the worst unless the rifle is already ruined). The parts are more valuable than the complete rifle. For instance just the trigger guard could cost you 75 to 100 bucks. There isn't much value in the rifle as a sporter because of the low serial number safety issues. Selling your parts and finding a complete rifle would be the best bet. (Has you barrel been cut?) Thanks for the reply Salt Flat. The barrel does not appear to have been cut. The front sight has been changed but barrel length still 24.

KD, If the bore is good and the date marking is good, the barrel would be a good seller or to use on another rifle that you aquire. Scrub the bore out with some hoppes and see what you have. Salt Flat

Hi KD, I agree with Salt Flat, for the most part.

The variables are many when trying to determine whether to rescue it, or not.
Does it have sentimental value, or is it something you are willing to sell?
Being an early serial number, it is a display rifle, not a shooter.

My only caveats for saving it, would be if the date of manufacture is the same on the
receiver, bolt, and barrel, and if they were unmolested, no extra holes in the receiver.
Does the barrel have a star on the muzzle, and other numbers stamped on
the barrel? If so, it might have more value. Especially if it is SRS listed.

If it is a collection of parts, and you don't have any attachment to it, then sell the parts.
