I had no idea. Now I don't feel so bad about buying the three piece set for $85 CDN a few years back...

I was at a gun show yesterday. I saw probably twenty stocks at several different tables. NONE had any cartouches left. They'd all been sanded down. I asked one of the dealers if these were CMPicon rifles and he replied, "Oh no. These are all from collectors. CMP has dried up. No more rifles." No cartouches, though.

Most stocks were selling for $75.

Yes, Rick, I remember your lonely fight at the time. Initially, many of us just regarded it as yet another bad fake in a long line of them. The real impetus for GCAicon was the revelation that the faker was a GCA member. Then we had to nail it down totally. The Association had a lot at risk and had to get it right, so we were as thorough as we could get. The same caution applied in our exposure of that fake M1C with the forged documents from a notorious crook down South. We spent months accumulating evidence to prove conclusively what we knew to be true.

Interesting. You guys have done a great service to collectors in doing what you can to expose the fakers out there. It is appreciated.

Metacomet, it is harder today because just like the Ford Chevy fight or the Dem to Rep fights many now feel it is ok and I still get messed with and had a guy on CMPicon that they had to warn but now he tags along saying stupid things just to make sure he is in a thread I am in to get at me. It is sad how some get so offended when you are helping others and they feel forgers are ok. I have had people like this goof ball start calling fake real and real ones fake arguing that I cannot tel the difference since so many different stamps have been made. That old argument was turned over yeas ago but to the new collectors it seems plausible,, again.

Just like my stock work that gets old so does answering questions that have been asked a hundred times. I have seen many stock refinisher's come full tilt and die out fast as it is a labor of love and not a money maker. Just like helping people from loosing money is just not something I can let happen no matter how many fights I have had trying to prove something was a fake and being personally attacked over it. Some do not realize how many phone calls and emails I get. My wife has wanted to choke me when I am sitting down to dinner and the phone rings for help. After all these yeas and all the good people that have stopped at our home she is a bit easier with it and understands most of the time Rick Bicon

    Fakers

When I was Chairman of GCAicon I very badly wanted to set up a legal fund to attack fakers in court whenever the victim was a member. Even if a conviction wasn't possible, the expense to the faker of defending against a suit would make the potential profit from faking not worth it. My dream was that being a GCA member would be like being a Roman citizen in antiquity -- don't abuse one or the guys with the SPQR flags would come tromping in and burn down your city. We went round and round on it for a year, but eventually there wasn't enough support because the risk was so high.
