Did Remington produce both 2 and 4 groove barrels at the same time?

Or were all 2 groove/4 groove barrels made within specific date ranges?

Phil Sharpe writing in his "The Rifle in America" (1947) has a short but detailed section on WW2 "Springfield" ('03 and variants) production. Sharpe states that two groove production was initially introduced experimentally. Accuracy and barrel life with the two groove versions was determined to be acceptable so production was continued. So it appears that Remington had both styles of barrel in production for at least part of the WW2 period.

Sharpe also describes Remington's use of "button" swaging to make rifle barrels. The process was apparently much faster than cut rifling/

For what its worth my information on A4 rifles shows mainly four groove barrels used on A4's until mid-1943. Thereafter most of them are seen with two groove barrels.

    Hope this helps.

I guess they just produced piles of blanks and marked them when finally shaped and threaded. And it could be possible that the blanks mixed up.

I recall reading somewhere that Remington did not shutdown 4 groove production. But they could produce so many 2 groove barrels that the 2 groove far over-shadowed the 4 groove production.

I know for sure they were producing both in August of 43, I have 2 and 4 grooves dated 8-43.

Although I don't have information specific to this question, I do know that with almost all other changes in the Remington M1903/03A3 rifles, there was not a "stop/start" date for changes - they were usually transitioned into production.
