    Lee Metford Stock Bolt Question

I have to remove the butt from a Lee Metford carbine and have encountered something I have not seen before.

I can see the stock bolt buffer, which appears to be leather or fiber. In the centre is a screw head of about 5/16 - 3/8" in diameter. The slot is wide and relatively shallow. I am theorizing it is a retaining screw for the stock bolt buffer, and it threads into the head of the stock bolt.

    Anybody know for sure?

No. What you can see is the head of the BOLT, stock, butt that holds the butt to the rifle. The buffer or WAD thing is indeed leather or thick hard oiled card or fibre sits on top of the bolt head and buffers the oil bottle while it's in the butt. Remove the buffer with a length of wire coathanger bent into a hook at the very end - unless you have the TOOL, removing wad! and you'll see the full size of the BOLT, stock butt.

    Peter,
You are absolutely correct. I had mistakenly thought the head I was seeing was flush with the rear face of the buffer.

    Foolish me
    Thanks
