    1944 Lithgow Markings..??

    A friend donated me this old Lithgowicon .... could someone explain the markings on the receiver rear , the 1 ,2,3,4, ......10 ect..?

    Inspector's stamps, I guess done as the body passes each stage of manufacture. Ian Skennertonicon calls them viewer's marks (The Lee Enfield, p574)

    They are inspection "view" marks. Each one confirms a procedure during machining has been completed within spec. The same goes for the marks around the barrel.
