Country of origin stamp

I posted this over on Surplus Rifle Forum and thought that I would ask here also.

On some early import Enfields they have "ENGLAND" stamped on the receiver. This is supposed to be the country of origin. My questions are:

1. Is the country of origin suppposed to be "where the rifle was made"?, or,
2. Is it supposed to be the country it was imported from?

The reason that I ask is, I have a 1944 Long Branch with "ENGLAND" stamped on the receiver. Another possibilty I have thought of is that the individual that actually stamped the rifle made an assumption because it was an Enfield.

Yes, (AFAIK) country of origin is where it was manufactured. Yes, somebody exporting a bunch of No4 's from England didn't know the Longbranch was Canadian. Have heard of both LB and Savage made No4's with the "ENGLAND" stamp.

That's interesting because we often used to see kit from different parts of the CES from 'foreign' stuff that had the UK '99' NATO code numbers. It was clearly wrong! Some M-16 or C7 stuff was marked as, say, B4-1005-99-xxx-xxxx!!!!!
