Just on a curve ball as that's what I am apparently renowned for has anyone watched the clip of the new M-60 fire a 1 pull 850 round belt 1 min 45 seconds without a stoppage or barrel change using a composite barrel that's good for 15,000 rounds.
My B/Inlaw reckons there was a good chance the old M-60s when he was on the holiday in that far off land somewhere in Asia it was not unusual for the ol girl to have a stoppage or 2 in one belt let alone 850 rounds at once.

If you can find the link on utube its pretty good especially the firer at the last round he looks mighty relieved.

We didn't have any trouble with that Peter...but it WAS an 8mm gun so maybe that part was close enough.

I see in the second photo the sight is folded backwards, was this normal practice as it doesn't appear correct to me.

BP: The sight was always laid flat, unless actually ready to fire. Or the gun was on a Tripod, or Bipod (Light) Role in a fire position in the Field.

You patrolled/Carried the gun with the sight down. Becuase it would otherwise. Catch on equipment/ projections Etc. Or stick in your Belly!

The second photo show's the gun on Asphalt hard standing. Which suggest's to Me. that this Pic was taken after/ before an Exercise, back in Barracks. The gun was stood whilst equipment/ gear was unloaded from vehciles.
After a good cleaning, the sling & BFA removed from the Weapon. were altogether returned to their respective squadron/ Rifle Company Armouries.

The next Imediate phase, was to get back to the blocks for a LONG Yearned for Shower & change into fresh clothes! Then your combat equipment was cleaned & repacked, ready for the next 'Crash-Out' / Exercise.
Where we would be ready to show those Filthy Soviet Baby Eating Hoards. That We Proud Young 'Lions' were ready to defend our Grannies Back Home, The Wonderous Green Fields of England, & Lucy in the N.A.F.F.I (PX To our US Cousins!)

Yes, we were ready to lay down our lives if absolutely nessacary. To defend to the Bitter end, with our Magazines Loaded with BLANK Ammo! (IF you were lucky to actually HAVE any blank Ammo! No Problem if you were attached to an Infantry Unit. But Second line units Like Engineers, Signals, CORPS Units. You were VERY hard pressed to find 20 rounds a man!....)

I am Proud to have served through the Cold War & helped to have shaped the 'Modern' World & ensure the relative Freedoms. That we all enjoy today. IE: Shut you Mouth, do as your told, Cough up when we tell you to pay an unfair Tax. AND smile whilst doing it!......................
