Could be the Japaneseicon sling is a Frenchicon sling that was attached to the rifle in Indochina. They look almost identical to me.

I have a Frenchicon sling on an 1892 Berthier carbine but, it has no dog ear and the buckle looks heavier, like it's cast not wire like the one here.

I am leaning Frenchicon on the one with the dog ear due to the photos in warpig's link. I looks like the Japaneseicon sling but without the belt buckle type fastener.

I have five Frenchicon slings going from new production to who knows how old. The thing with these is they were being produced from the 1880's through the 1960's and had two major wars and a couple of minor ones in there in between. The three new production show a heavy buckle and two color variations (one might be a repro but I don't know why anyone would make a repro). The two older ones both vary with the dog ear and the thickness of the end. One is full width, the other is slightly narrower. Both have wire buckles, one more nicely made than the other.

A Japaneseicon carbine is about the same size as the Berthiers that would have these slings so it's not unreasonable to assume they wouldn't have used captured stocks to replace worn Japanese slings and since no one seems to know a lot about them, it could then be assumed these were Japanese slings instead of French. That doesn't mean they aren't Japanese slings, they could be. It just seems unlikely to me that they would have a completely different style sling for that one rifle.

The more I learn about slings the more it becomes apparent that the number of copied designs and cross pollination in terma of usage without markings a guess is about as clear as it will get with many slings.
