    Rangers and Garands at Dieppe

I have seen quite a few hours of war footage since last weekend, and one particular film spot intrigued me, that of the Dieppe raid, in August '42.

Clearly there was a Garandicon in the sand.

There were US 50 Rangers assigned to the mission, 3 were killed and plenty of equipment abandoned by the evacuees.

Photo number one for the link below, clearly shows a Dieppe Ranger, before the raid carrying a Garand and bandolier.

I know the Garand was used in the Phillipines before the surrender to the Japs, and this first use of the gun in Europe, must also be of an early example, that the Rangers brought over in '42.

Operation Torch in Nov '42, was also Garand laden and plenty of first 8000,000 Garands manufactured were in use by then. No wonder so few early guns exist.

I heard in my over 70 years of travels, that the M1s used by the U.S. rangers at Dieppe were on loan from the stock of Britishicon Lend Lease M1s in storage. The U.S. Army Air Forces was represented over Dieppe by the 31st Fighter Group, 8th A.F., flying reverse lend-lease Spitfires. (19 Aug. 1942)
