How to install barrel on receiver?

I have a barrel assembly and a stripped receiver. What is needed to install the barrel? I've seen M1 armourer's wrenches for sale for around $80, and I know there are supposed to be index marks on the barrel and receiver that you line up. But is there a proper way to mount/hold the receiver in a vise to prevent damage, and will the rifle automatically be headspaced with any M1/M2 bolt if the index marks are lined up? Or is it better to just bring the parts to a qualified gunsmith and have him do it? That way I wouldn't have to buy the wrench or any specialty tools.

Based on your questions I would say to take it to a qualified gunsmith.

The index marks only ensure that your front and rear sight align. Also, it means that your slide will be in proper alignment with the gas block.

If the barrel is new it will/should be "short chambered" and will need the finish reaming to set the headspace. If it is used it may need to be set back slightly and finish reamed. Again, I would recommend that you take it to a gunsmith.

Make sure the "qualified gunsmith" has done this before on M1 carbines. They should have the proper receiver and barrel clamps (not the $80 one you mentioned, they can break the trigger housing pin tang). Also, the gunsmith should have the proper wrench to remove/install the gas piston nut and tools for the front sight. Headspacing is best done with the bolt you plan to use, but if you don't have the bolt (yet), the gunsmith should have the correct field bolt, not to mention Go No/Go gages, & .30 carbine reamer. I've done about 20 of these, and each one has it's own slight differences due to tolerances. Best of luck.
