These illustrate that the "assembly line" at SA was not a line at all. We tend to think of Ford and a chassis moving along the line while parts are added until a car drove off the end. It wasn't that way at Springfield -- the assembly points were in different locations, and parts were trundled on carts from place to place. These photos show the famous receiver boxes of 20 each. They were stacked on top of each other so that it was clearly a LIFO operation. NOBODY cared about serial numbers, the one closest to hand was the next one used. Collectors like to neatly compartmentalize things like a certain part from this serial number on, but that's impossible. The best you can hope for is a general serial number range for changes.
