A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. The hole drilled in the barrel was a attempt to put in a gas vent in case of the casing rupturing. This was done when they were converted to 8mm Mauser (by installing a brand new barrel) as there was no gas vent in the original design. It is also a quick way to determine if it was converted to 8mm Mauser or not (besides other things like barrel length and the addition of the sight protectors).

Sorry I thought you were referring to the hole around the receiver (where they have the information on the rifle). Looking closer at your pictures I have no idea what that hole on the barrel itself is for.

The hole you are referring to, is the place where the rear sight screw was, before the barrel got re bored and re chambered then indexed by turning it on quarter turn.

My Vergueiro was indexed by even turning the barrel 1/2 a turn.
