Canteens...
I see this item for sale over on Hayes-Otupalik at $200...once again an item I didn't know existed. I suppose RCS has one filled with scotch in his liquor cabinet...or in the glove box of his truck. He keeps appearing with all this old stuff we've never seen.
I should think they were short lived or a test item only because of cost, comparative rarity...

Jim, I have one of the first issue green plastic canteens (still have it) marked U.S.
1966 ABCON . Water always tasted bad in the plastic canteen !

I had those in the early days. We had lots of cast off US issue. Guess we bought that stuff as surplus...

No, that's right Bill. These are a nearly transparent canteen as shown in the link. I'd never even seen one. I've seen the porcelain ones, in hand before. Usually chipped too...

Hi Jim, yes they existed during WWII. They were also 'stinky' too and unpopular. I saw one at one of the collecting shows several years ago and I just went through several WWII collecting books I have and found this page.
Bill, the porcelain is middle and top right. They pulled it because it had to be porcelain inside and outside. They didn't take into account how much abuse canteens took and every-time they were bumped or dented it made the porcelain inside chip off outside and inside. They say it was like drinking water with shards of glass in it. They took them out of production the first year they were used in 1942....
Today it's difficult to find one with complete porcelain outside and they are worth a lot more. It took me years to find one.
