.22RF Pattern 1914 Short Rifle No.1 - And others from the Melbourne Antique Arms Fair

G'day all,

I picked up quite a score today (I think so at least) with a new addition to my collection, a .22 PATT '14 No.1, converted by Westley Richards & Co. It seems to be a good honest example, with matching wood, nose cap, bolt and barrel. There were not a great deal of these converted (427 on the record), and the rifle has had quite a history. It needs a bit of a light clean up, but the bore is quite good, and the wood seems solid, I'm quite chuffed to have this piece in my collection to be honest. Would love to hear what you all think about it.



















There was quite a wide range of Enfields at the fair, including a HT Sniper, Q^P rifle, Calvary carbines and some of the rarer year Lithgows. As usual, there were quite a few junkers in the pile as well.

More to the point what were the prices like?

The prices were on the cheap side mate, your standard matching numbers 1940's Lithgow was going around $500-700 sticker price. I don't really have any dramas disclosing that I paid $1300 for my little piece of history. Not bad when you consider that No2 MkIV's are selling for $900-1000 for good examples.



The Hilux is on track It was on Jeff Panan's table mate, along with some other goodies.

Not sure I'd call $500-$700 for a standard 1940s Lithgow "on the cheap side", personally. Looks like you picked up a lovely rifle though!

That's only if you're buying them, of course. When you're selling them, they're worthless because they made millions of them during The War or something.

Every gun shop I have ever been to has SMLEs for sale and there's always tables full of them at the gun shows. Plenty of people are selling, they just want unreasonable prices for them IMHO.
