1957 National Matches
I know this is a long shot but no harm in asking. Would anybody have or know how I could get a copy of the 1957 match bulletin with a listing of the high power competitors for that year. Herschel, who posts on the CSP forum did have the 1958 bulletin, so maybe there is hope.
Reason I am asking is that I have a N.M. rifle that was purchased by a M/Sgt. Zimmerman at Camp Perry following the 1957 National Matches. I would like to get whatever info I can regarding him, especially his first name. I believe, when he competed in the 1957 Nat. Matches he may have been a member of the Minnesota National Guard team. I only based that on the fact that, other than Camp Perry in 1957, the other entries in his Score Book show him shooting at Camp Ridley, a Minnesota N.G. Base.
Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

You could try the Minnn. National Guard, but not likely they can or will help. A 1957 shooter would be how old today? 75-80? He may not be around anymore. Could you find a 1957/58 American Rifleman magazine. They always had the results and pictures of top shooters. Good luck.

Thanks Steve. I did contact the Minn. N.G. R&P Team via Facebook but nothing. Thought they might have had some historical records but N.G. I have a copy of he American Rifleman from 1957 but they only mention the top shooters of which he was not one.
All I know about Master Sgt. Zimmerman is that he is now deceased. To me 1957 does not seem so long ago LOL. I was in the Marine Corps in 1957 and am now 75 years old. As Sgt Zimmerman was a M/Sgt in 1957, I suspect he would be at least 10 years older than me. The last dated entry in his Score Book indicates he last fired competition in 1962, but not Camp Perry. I would think it was around this time he retired. May have been a WW2 vet. I have his military service number but that is not much help as the military now uses S.S. numbers and not being a family member, it is hard, if not impossible, to get any info from Govt. sources. I was thinking FOI but I don't even have his first name. He did sign the "Cash Sales Receipt" when he purchased the rifle at Camp Perry but I can't make out his first name. Oh well, the hunt goes on. Thanks for taking the time to answer. Joe

I have reviewed the 1957 National Match results listed in the October 1957 AMERICAN RIFLEMAN magazine. Only the winners of the various matches are listed.
What I find interesting is that the winner of the Service Rifle Match using a 1957 NM M1shot a higher score than the Civilian Open Rifle Championship. This was with an M1 which was not greatly improved over the Service Grade M1.
National Civilian Open Rifle Championship
Winner – Ammon E. Bell- 734 89V
National Service Rifle Championship
Winner - S/Sgt. Michel Pietroforte USMC – 738 78V

Yes, IIRC 1957 was the first time the M1 outshot all the bolt guns.
