A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. Interesting watching the rapid firing of the Ross and seeing how the position of the straight bolt handle requires a bit of a movement for the hand to switch to the trigger. I bet you could probably increase the firing speed even more using a down turn bolt handle and probably even more using the Frenchicon MAS 36 bent bolt style where your hand/finger is closer to the trigger each time. Knowing how fast the LE can fire in rapid fire I would think the Ross with a bent bolt handle could compete with it if not be even a little faster. Maybe they figured that the straight bolt handle provided more leverage to close or to open a stuck cartridge in the chamber then a belt bolt handle in a straight pull. Which probably did help in the trenches later on. Anyway, Just a thought, Ray

I sort of agree Ray, if the straight pull was so great, why weren't there more of them and why didn't they come to the top. There were several patterns, but they sank into obscurity, or in this case were cast into a shell hole and a #1 mk3 was picked up. Nice enough for collecting and plinking, but...
    Regards, Jim
