    '44 Izhevsk PU

I thought today I would share with you my PU sniper. Purchased it from RGUNS a few months ago and was very pleased. It's all matching and there is not an ounce of electo-pencil, even on the scope mount. All the serials seem to be the original to gun, the 3s are a big giveaway. The scope was refurbished in 53 and the scope number is scratched out. After doing some research on why the scope number is scratched out the opinions I received were that the rifle was mostly likely a police issue after the war and a light refurbishment and for some reason they needed a new scope so the number was just scratched out since it didn't match the rifle. I've been told that the scope would have been force-matched on the mount and barrel shank if an arsenal had done that. This is all just speculation so I'm always open to other opinions. Anyways, the rifle shoots amazing and it was worth paying RGUNS prices to get one that I knew was the "real deal". Thanks for reading!

P.S. Yes the scope is titled to the right haha. That's just how it came.

love the cat pics. my late cat Timmy seemed to like my Rguns 91/30 PU as well (mine's a '43).

there seem to have been a few ways rifles and scopes were match in re-arsenal situations. my scope matches my rifle, but the barrel shank seems to have had 2 numbers over stamped to make it match.

    Nice looking PU.

The Rguns snipers are a bit different than the typical refurb. Apparently they were mostly original when transferred for Police use. They did not get the same kind of refurbishment the military rifles did. They were out of the military system. Many, probably most, of them did have scope replacement or serviced. A large number of them have the original scope serial number defaced. One theory is that this was a way to keep them from being IDed as military property.

The number on the mount is not typical of a military rifle. Only Tula stamped a number on the mount when they made a PU and the number was the rifle's serial number. Again, these did not get the typical military arsenal system refurbishment. It appears most rifles only got what they needed, like a fresh coat of shellac, scope rebuild, whatever. They were not totally disassembled, parts mixed and the whole weapon refinished and renumbered. Some can be found with mostly factory original parts. I have 2 1944 Tula that appear factory except the scopes. The mount have the original rifle number. All numbered parts match and all are Tula. Both have 1944 Tula stocks.

It also seems that about 20% of Izhevsk PUs have a canted scope mount. To compensate the Soviets twisted the scope in the mount to put the vertical part of the reticule over the center line of the bore. Yours is likely one of those. The user was expected to hold the rifle twisted to keep reticule level. Pretty odd that they did not make sure the mount was mounted near perfectly but my 1947 rifle is the same way, as is a 42 and several more.
