M1 Carbine Barrel Bands

I've seen Barrel bands Type 1A and Type 2, there is a big difference in looks and a price difference, but i just acquired 3 Type 2 Bands and to me they look like Type 3 with the Lug cut off. Upon further inspection out of the 5 type 3 bayonet lugs i have there's 2 markings that the Bayonet lugs have and a different screw that the Type 2 don"t have. Would anybody know if they change to Type 2 from the 1A before going to the Type 3 Barrel Band with the Lug on it ?

Yes the type 2 band came out and was used before the type 3 band. The type 2 band first appeared in early 1944 and was in use till November 1944 time frame when Inland and Winchester started using the type 3 band.

If you can show some good pictures of the 'Type II' bands, I'm sure we can offer some conclusions. Typically the top forward edge of the barrel clamp lies about 1/16" back under the forward top edge of the band. This is very hard to mimic when cutting off a Type III extension but not impossible. Then we look at the spot welds for number and placement and of course the maker's mark. Many Type IIIs have been cut off by reenactors and they're always popping up as 'Type II' bands.

It is hard to tell but is the inner band recessed in relationship to the wide outer band?

Yes...Im holding it right now and the inner band that the barrel goes through is recessed inside the outer band, i dont a one of those tools thats measures in micro mm. But if it was cut i think it would have been flush or on the outside of the outer band

The screw head on the pictured Type 2 band appears flat and thus will not allow use of a carbine round as a screwdriver. Typical of $25 repros.

Agreed, a reproduction or a commercial one but not original for sure.

Your correct all screw heads can be taken off by the round, but i just took mine off with a carbinAttachment 56679e round
