Found out a few things happened since my last range trip. We had a rifle detonate on one guy AND an accidental discharge from a Moron.

Elmer finished shooting and was behind the line at one of the shelves. He was putting his rifle back in it's case so he closed the bolt and then guess what he did? Yup, BLAM!! sends a round "that he didn't know was in there" and at our range shouldn't have been in the rifle at that point, down the length of the BENCHES where guys sit and wait IF it's busy which it was not so no one was sitting there, into the soda machine at the end of the benches. Did I mention people sit on those benches? including myself and my children.

Dude tried to act like nothing happened but there where 2 other members present at the time and they both confronted him. He didn't sign in or out so they "made" him do so, so he could be identified "they checked his badge too". This Bubba Fudd was only suspended for 30 days which most guys I talked to today feel he should be booted including myself. Anyway, always be aware at the range especially during hunting season when Elmer's hunt'in rabbits.

This time of year brings the one day shooters out. got to have eyes not just in back of your head but in you ace too. Only good thing about these guys is they shot 2 or 3 boxes of nice shiny new ammo an leave the brass. just had that discussion with club officers seam like over 50% of the membership only uses the range 1 day a year to check there deer rifles.

That is the general rule at the range I frequent though we have official RO some of them shouldn't be. There is a way to approach people that may need instruction while using a firearm and there are ways you shouldn't. To quote Jason Patrick as Jim Bowie addressing William Barrett Travis in the last remake of the Alamo. "Sometimes Buck it's not what you say it's the way you say it." We have such a RO at our range and unfortunately he is the head RO. The man has no people skills. Having been both a supervisor and a trainer on numerous occasions Sometimes you have to use kid gloves on fragile egos.

As far as the weekend warriors go it reminds me of the morning I sat in my blind watching the doe I shot do her death dance and heard something behind me. I turned to look and there was a young man in his late teens strolling through the woods wearing a brand new pair of Carhart overalls (nice dark brown) a white stocking cap and a red (not hunter orange) highway vest. An accident waiting to happen? When he saw me he turned around and went a different direction so I wasn't able to explain to him the errors of his ways. Yes there are nimrods in the woods that need to be watched out for.

As for using the range, shooting my rifles in prior to deer season is all I ever did until my son in law came along and decided he wanted to shoot. I averaged about 5 rounds per year through my rifle. 3 at the range and 2 in the two deer I brought home. I grew up in a home that didn't waste bullets. Hard habit to break.

every club every group has atleast one moron. its in the rule book you must let one in the club. make it correct.

At our club here in south Puget Sound there is a four hour class before you can join and $150 per year dues. This in itself weeds out most of the nitwits. However, once per year, just before hunting season the club leaves the gate open (normally card lock) for the general public to sight in their hunting rifles. Generally I stay away on those days or go early morning or late afternoon. As mmppres noted it is an excellent time to find once fired brass. Tom

the sad part id most of these nimrod are probably nice guys. but like stated earlier in message you have to approch in a nice way. some time the offered help is greatly appericated an others well its bad.
have had a few that were thankful an also very upset that what they were doing was wrong way. some shooters (both men n women) never had the right up bringing around firearms.
