    Ross 1905 Questions

Picked this up at the local club swap meet today. Always one for the weird stuff it spoke to me as it was on the table next to mine. This is fresh ground for me so any info and opinions would be appreciated.
Bunches of questions such as ..Where is the serial number located etc. The gentleman seemed to think it was issued to the Mounties but I doubt it somehow. He has shot it on a regular basis over the 4 years he has owned it so it should be a good shooter. All thoughts on the markings are most welcome. Many Thanks in advance.Attachment 58342Attachment 58351Attachment 58350Attachment 58349Attachment 58348Attachment 58347Attachment 58346Attachment 58345Attachment 58344Attachment 58343Attachment 58352

Looks like this one went to the States as there appears to be the US Ordnance marking and serial number under the wrist. The Canadianicon serial number is on the buttstock which to me looks like 470 or 476 AC over the year of 1908. Canadian unit markings are stamped on the wood as well above the Canadian serial number.

Also the wood has been cut down a tad your missing the nose cap and sight protector.

    Hope that helps

Many Thanks for the great info. Barrel length seems approx 22". The sight appears to be in it's original position on the barrel unless it was very professionally moved which seems to confuse me when the wood has been trimmed back. I am searching pictures to see if I can see what it is supposed to look like. There seems to be a plethora of Ross rifle styles and types. I would love to figure out the unit markings as well just for fun. I was reading that many of these were imported into the US for training use would that have been during or post WW1?
    Thanks again for your help.

I believe the barrel would have originally been 28 " long.

Interesting - its a 1905 action, with a sliding button safety but no magazine cut-off? which is odd? or has the lever for the cut-off been removed [from inside the trigger guard] @ some point?

I think it is a sportered military Ross as has been said. A friend of mine had one exactly like it and he couldn't figure out what it was either.

I think the cut off has been removed although as I don't know what they look like in detail I am sure that the lever has been removed at least. Seems a really nice addition to my Enfields and until I can find a full military Ross this will do fine. Now to keep my eyes open on my travels...

There was some discussion of this mark on the Ross Rifle forum. It is a Quebec Arsenal inspection mark, but it not seen on most MkIIs. It may be associated with rifles prepared for competition use, but that is just a theory at this point.
“There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”

    Edward Bernays, 1928

Much changes, much remains the same.
