Question on steel door for gun room.

I'm building a gun room and I'd appreciate any advice on a steel door. My thoughts are to have a fake front or Murphy door in front of the steel door. Just wondering what you've seen or used in the past? Anyone already make door kits like this ready to go? Looking for ideas here.

One here had a pegboard wall in front of his vault, a bank door...everything gunshop related was hung there at random and it did well. Another had a bookcase built to roll to one side and expose the door. Yet another built it in between two rooms, and had a closet wall he went into it through. It was 6 ft wide and 10 ft deep. Double racks, upper and lower all the way around plus shelves...

It's not just the door. What will the walls be? A pro will know where the weak points are. You need to consult a professional security person. A steel door in a wood frame can be pried open very easily. I'm glad to see that you are taking precautions to safeguard your guns.

He's quite right of course. The vault door was set into a concrete box room. The wooden ones were just that. To have drywall around any strong door would be foolish, but one hopes anyone undertaking this safety measure would know that.

You could use AR500 abrasion resistant steel plate for the door and to line the walls.

My arms door is 1/8 inch sheet steel sandwiched between 2x6`s !..............

A steel door is a good idea and I have also seen you can buy some pretty inexpensive "vault" style doors. If you are using walls of studs and plywood or gyproc you can make them pretty cut proof by stuffing the space between the walls with a plastic baler twine or something like it. Apparently if jams the saw if someone is trying to cut thru to gain access. You can also put it between the roof joists to help prevent someone from trying to saw thru if your room is in the basement.

Short of building a concrete room the best defense is a large dog that always wants a little more to eat at any given time.

I have also read 80% of people who want to break into your home are deterred by a alarm sticker on your windows, even if you don't have a alarm system you can buy realistic looking stickers on ebay.

I used cattle panels inside my Arms Room walls covered with 5/8 in. plywood.............
