Lyman Alaska scope

Don't know if this is the right place for this info. I can get a Lyman Alaska scope with rings in very good condition. markings All Weather I think ser.# A7744 it also has cross hairs & caps on the turrets. Would any one know the date & would this scope be good on the Garand. And apro. value Will try & get good pics. Thanks for any info

I'm not sure I understand what you have in mind. The M1 rifle was designed for iron sights, & there's no way to mount a scope without some mods to the rifle. For a sniper rifle utilizing a scope, the US War Dept developed the M1C & M1D; you would need to make substantial changes to convert your rifle to clone one of these. However, there are a couple of commercial mounts available that could be used to mount a scope on an M1 rifle; one is offered on the Fulton Armory website.

While the Lyman Alaskan was evaluated for use on the M1C & M1D, the versions purchased in quantity were marked M81 & M82. The Alaskans generally sell in the $100-300 range in the US, but most folks buying them are using them only until they can find/afford an M81 or M82.

Neal Myers thanks for that info. What is the A 7744 for. A & or B prefix were thy a G.I. ISSUE ???. I see some sights with no letter prefix. Just want to know if the scope that I can get was used by the military or if it is just a commercial sight.

That's a commercial hunting scope and worthless for an M1C. Thanks to GCA research, everybody knows that the M1C needs either an M81/M82 WWII scope or a B-prefix Alaskan for Korea. Don't waste your money.

If you want to add a scope to your Garand, there are after market mounts. But the cost and time to drill and tap your receiver is not worth it. First you will degrade you Garand and never get much out of it. Buy a M1C from the CMP. You can get one with the base. There are aftermarket ring with will fit the M1C base for about $250. Though your scope will not be correct it will look right and will work fine. As Bob stated the correct scope is the M81, M82 to Alaskan Lyman B prefix. And for those scope be ready to put out $2 to $3 K.

It's not for a Garand & would never drill & tap any military gun to put a scope on it. It would be for a Mi carbine. I should have mention that.

I'm just trying to find out if the A prefix scope was A G.I. Issue .

Well, that does make a difference........and one that you can certainly take to our sister forum: the M1/M2 Carbine forum.

But, you aren't going to be able to mount an Alaskan on that, either. Not a lot of folks put a scope on the carbine, since it is basically a 100 yd gun. But, those of us with failing vision can always shoot better with a scope. The only set up that works really well on the carbine, without damaging the receiver or barrel, is a long eye relief scope (like the Leupold M8-2x) clamped to the barrel with a B-Square mount (now obsolete); this does require sacrificing a handguard.
