    Picked up a Type I

    Hello,

Well, like usual, I went to the gun show with a list of things I was looking for and get this instead. Its a type I carcano in 6.5 arisaka, in what i'd consider very good shape. According to the seller, it was brought back form WWII (I have the vet's name, preliminary research told me he's a WWII Army vet.). Its been sporterized, although the only things done to it was some checkering under where you grip it forward and at some point it earned a new custom buttplate with a small buttplate on the pistol grip part of the stock. Otherwise, its intact and the markings under the reciever says AS, small unreadable mark, and a 39. Here are some decent pictures:

I have a Type I rifle made in Italyicon (perhaps Beretta) that was supposedly made for the Jap Navy. It looks a lot like yours but is in 6.5 Jap, not 6.5 Carcano. They were ordered without any markings on them so that the manufacturer could not be identified. Please do a chamber cast before you shoot this. The wrong cartridge would be catastrophic and potentially deadly.
