A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Can't tell exactly from the pics, but it looks like someone once took sandpaper to the receiver (and probably other parts of the gun) because it seems to show signs of rust pits. Looks like the Serial Numbers on the receiver were then reworked after the rust and sandpaper partially obliterated them.

I would not buy this gun without a complete visual inspection, including under the hand-guard.

Not sure what the exchange rate is in Kiwi Land, but in the US this gun (if it's what I think it is), is worth in the $350-450 range.

    Good luck.

I have seen better for about the same money. $650NZ = $500US, but this appears to be 6/47 so early, I'm just not 100% sure about the serial number (but I think its OK) amongst other things. eg above the 7 in 47 looks like a welded up scope bracket mounting hole? the bolt handle around teh serial number seems to look like its been sanded taking off the angle grinding marks? are the marks not "the wrong way" for a lathe?

Here in NZicon there were a lot of wornout No4s were converted to "No4 jungle carbines" 9also a lot of wornout no4s!) and a lot of very rough no5s, so you have to be very careful.

all in all I think I'll pass on this, by a mile, LOL.

We have a big auction in April anyway, usually there are a few for sale I can look at closely in good time.

"All matching numbers to bolt, receiver, magazine & woodwork... I purchased this rifle 12 months ago after wanting one for years and it had to have matching numbers. "

So he got the matching numbers, but Ali Bubba & Sons of 666 Khyber Pass Road, Kabul would probably have made a better job of them!

Funnily enough there is a 666 Khyber Pass Road here in Auckland New Zealandicon. Next time I drive past I'll see if Ali Bubba & Sons have set up shop in NZ.
