    trapdoor iron rack

    Here's the complete post from CSPicon

    My buddy bought this in the 80's. Pretty sure it's a rack for the carbines with a place for bayonets. The post looks like it was replaced.
    The hardware for locking the guns in was disassembled.

    Post Height = 43"
    Top = Height = 34 1/2 - diameter = 22 1/2
    Middle = height = 18 adjustable = diameter = 13
    Bottom = diameter =27 1/2

    slots = 2 1/4 deep x 1 1/2 wide tappered

    It was purchased from Sam's in Jamaica, queens, NY. He moved his surplus shop to Vegas many years ago.

    There are 11 slots for guns and 12 pins for bayonets on the center shelf.
    The holes in the top are in a smaller diameter than the pins in the center shelf.

    Hi, I posted a reply to your new information on the old CSPicon but since it is now defunct, you probably didn't see it. I did a little investigative work with my tape measure and, based on your measurements, can tell you that the following will fit: Trapdoor rifle and carbine, Krag rifle and carbine, Springfield Model 1903, Model 1917, and (just barely) the M1icon Garand. Judging from the shape of the slots and the shape of the locking devices (I'm assuming that those are what are laying on the top shelf), I still believe that the rack was made for the Springfield Model 1903 and the Model 1917. I think it has a World War I look to it, but that's just my opinion.

    one more pic

    The only reason I think it's for a trapdoor carbine is the small opening when the barrels are locked.

    You do have a point about the small openings, now that you have posted a pic of it with the latches closed. Could also be for the Kragicon carbine, or for some foreign gun that we haven't even thought of, or for shotguns in the sporting good dept. of Sears in the 1930s for that matter. Did you look for any markings, especially on the underside of the base? Might be interesting to carefully clean off that old silver paint to see if the original color could be determined. I once saw one of these that still had the different guys last names stenciled on the base in front of the slot for the butt.
