Having had the dubious pleasure of discharging a few rounds "rock and roll" style from an L1A1, AR-10 and M-14, I concur with the "authorities" who "restricted" such practice. The AR-10 was a bit more "controllable", despite the relatively light weight, because of the more "straight-line" layout, but the experience was more "exiting" than "pleasant". Interestingly, it was quite a trick to get even the first round from the AR-10 in target. Because of the light weight, you tend to grip the rifle AND "jab" at the trigger trying to hold short bursts on target and failing dismally. I found that one trick was to "start low and go with the flow", somewhat akin to the technique for some SMGs. Fortunately those weren't MY rifles being "abused", just me paying for the ammo.
On "rock and roll", especially with the 7.62 NATO round, unless you are built like "Arnie" in his younger days, whilst the first round MAY go where intended, the subsequent ones will most likely be directed increasingly skywards.
The more time I spent with automatic weapons of sundry types, the more convinced I became that, except in certain tactical situations, the value of full-auto was more psychological (for both shooter and shootee), than of any real value in adding to the body count.
If you ever get to see a sustained-fire machine-gun LIVE shoot, and carefully note the fall of shot, you will see the steadily moving "beaten" zone. The thing is, if you are properly dug-in within that beaten zone, you will be safe (unless mortars or artillery are added to the mix). HOWEVER, as for shooting back, you will be distinctly UNMOTIVATED, more so to leave said pit or dugout. Thus, the automatic weapon has taken you out of the game for as long as they want to keep it up, or until the other team's infantry arrive just behind the MG fire mission, bearing nasty high-explosive gifts to really ruin your day.

Agreed, because it happened. And yes, as a single fire rifle they're superb but on auto...not so much with the light barrel. As time goes on I find myself less interested in F/A and more drawn to S/A...anywayzzz.

I remember shooting a few bursts from a modified L1A1 on a range up Country somewhere and there were some Brit Artillery blokes half watching the proceedings leaning on the back of their Land Rover. I fired a few bursts and the chatter stopped and I heard a voice say '......... what the xxxx as he got there......' and one of the others said that Australia had some auto versions. They'd never seen an L2 - let alone an L1A1 running on auto. It really was like wildfire but no good really!
There was a bit of a sequel to the day as one of the poms was sat reading a pommy local newspaper that his parents used to send over every week or so. Blow me, it was the Swindon paper and he came from Kingsdown. We bumped into each other by chance a couple of years later and have remained pals ever since!
