Mike Carlin Passing

I don't post here much, I hang around the 1903 board mostly. However, being an old shooter, and knowing that Mike Carlin posted here a number of times I thought I should let the folks that knew him know that he passed away two days ago. He was a Sergeant Major in the Army, and was an avid rifle and pistol shooter for over 30 years. He had just taken an assignment with USARC as the G7 Sergeant Major and was looking forward to re-energizing the Army Reserve Competitive Marksmanship Program. I first met him when he was a SP4 machine gunner in a rifle company over 30 years ago. He could make the "pig" squeel and hit with it like it was a point fire weapon. He will be missed.
Yes he will! Mike was a super guy both on this forum and at CP! It would be nice to know some details.

Some additional details on Mike Carlin's death.
He suffered a massive heart attack in his home around 4:30 PM on March 2, and died several hours later at a local hospital. Other than some "heartburn" earlier in the day, the attack came without warning. I believe that the funeral was on Thursday in Ft. Snelling MN.

Sad news indeed. I'd communicated with Mike on many occasions about marksmanship and he was always a mine of information and ready to share it. He will surely be missed.

I wonder how old he was. I remember he also signed off with "Yours in Marksmanship."

One of my best friends, a fellow shooter and range marshal, died of a massive heart attack this past January and he was the same age. It was a severe blow to me personally, our church, and the whole community. Carl

Thought I would update this a little. Mikes funeral was well attended. The Army did right by him, and sent him home with an escort of his peers. He actually passed while on TDY in North Carolina. He was interned at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, St. Paul, close to where he grew up. He was eulogized by the Commandant of the NCO Academy from Fort McCoy, WI where Mike had been the director of instruction. The service was held in the Fort Snelling Chapel and a memorial was held for him at Fort MacPhearson, GA the following week. He left three girls, all grown, one came all the way from Russia
for the funeral. I never made it, I was recalled to the Army from retirement and am deployed. However, Memorial Day, 2010 I plan a visit to decorate his grave, say my goodbye, and reflect. I remember his first service rifle match. Bruce Woodford got is first leg that day for rifle...so that might clue you in to how long ago that was.
