I think I see a couple of .45 cases in the air , there . Wouldn't want to be out in the open scratching my nose in that case.

They really don't look too concerned. I suspect they were mostly goofing off. Heck one man even seems to be writing a letter home.

Two Garandicon muzzles in the foreground leveled in the same direction as the Thompson. Nose picker seems a bit out of place. Guys behind the berm don't seem too worried for sure.

Makes you wonder if this was on the front edge of the airfield when they relaxed for a second thinking they were done for the day before being ordered to run across it in the open into the barrels of the defenders.

The phenomena of people seemingly engaged in immediacy and others in rather casual stances is fairly common in battlefield images. We can only speculate on the state of mind of the individuals and if we were to see a series of images or film, it is likely that we could observe that within a few seconds their "body language" changed dramatically. Medical people seem particularly "immune" to combat conditions and absorbed in their jobs, which is a good thing.

I say he may be working on a grid reference for a stonking or some arty to assist with the gentle persuasion for the enemy to give up the position and the war away
