T-38 ID help, value question
I will be buying a Type 38 from a friend, and need some help on the type and value of it. He has had the rifle for over 30 years and never shot it. It appears in pretty good shape, although someone cut it down at some time in the past. Has a pretty good bore, and from what info I can find, I think all parts match. Every part on the rifle has the same 3 digit number stamped in it, which matches a number inside the stock. Any help/ info on the rifle would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

That's a tough call to make on value. Personally I would steer clear of it as it's been reworked (barrel cut and stock resized) but as to a guess I would say it's probably about close in value to a sportered rifle as is ($150-$200) but if you can source out and install a new barrel and fix the stock to the correct length it'll be worth a little more since the parts that are there are matching. Other than that it has a parts value to it since you have a bayonet lug, rear sight with ramp, a complete bolt, and other small pieces that look in good shape. Either way good luck with your purchase.

As stated, steer clear of it. If you add money for another bbl and parts to bring it up to speed, you will be spending more then it's worth and you will never get your money back out of it. Ray

They have difficulty getting $100 for something like that in my area. If the bores good it might make a good shooter or a basis for a sporterized rifle but no collector value.

Thanks for all the replies! I do not know that much about these rifles, and wanted to get an opinion on it. It is a shame it has been cut, as all the parts match, and it has a very good bore. Everything is tight and smooth, so it would prob. be a good shooter even though it has been cut. It actually appears to be very lightly used for a milsurp. The good one got away from me, as he had a T99 with untouched mum and the sight with wings, cleaning rod-everything in awsome condition, but had to sell it when he was going through his divorce.
Thanks again!
