Kidding.......? But you are 100% correct. It's been said that you ought to read some firearms books out of sheer curiosity of what you'll be told next! I mean, how many times have you heard that the Bren was too accurate or the Sten was made from bed frame tube and cost 35p

But on the Q of the Mk5, it's a bit of a hobby horse of mine. We had a lot of info about these as the trials were instigated and controlled by the SASC (as was) from Hythe and there was a bit of paperwork there that I could put my hands on PLUS several original and untouched rifles. I used to bang on to the L-E visitors about it but how many took up my offer of free and total access to research it?

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. There was an original and matching one at milarm 3 months before that for $750...and it sat for at least 3 months before it sold.

A local dealer that I am freindly with has a 1922 all numbers matching and complete example for $1400 - A sister rifle closed on gunbroker recently for $800 or so.

They seem not so rare, everybody looks at it, but few takers unless it fills a hole or a need.

I dont think I will be adding one...

There comes a time in any collecting and especially firearms where the price of what an advanced collectible will pay is well above the price of the punter who collects what we used to call bottom feeder stock as it "was cheap" and the then the avid collector who will spend a bit more on the uncommon and semi rare items and then the advanced collector who will pay any price for something he does not have or is upgrading what he does have.
    whewww that was a mouthful.
As I have always said, "you never pay to much you just buy too soon."
I was talking to one of the largest military firearms collectors in the world a short while who informed me that he was selling off most of his collection. He had just lost interest and the hunt was the whole game for him. Once he had everything he had ever wanted he just lost interest, however he did retain one small line within his collection. It was a most enlightening chat with one who had absolutely on issues on paying top dollar for anything he wanted and was able to do so.
Just another person's perspective on collecting........ and collecting quality and rarity.

I believe that there is a large collection of Britishicon Rifles coming up for sale in the USAicon in very near future. It will be interesting to see if it goes for sale in it's entirety or just to auction. Prices realised will be interesting.

Robert, which collection are you talking about, and why do you believe it's coming to the market? Is it from someone here?

Korean War Educator: Memoirs - Bob Faris
Gives the background to Mr Faris. He went on to build various collections of firearms. Some have already been sold but the Britishicon Collection was / available a few months ago in Arizona. I will see if I can get permission to post contact details. The seller wanted to sell the whole collection and I'm told the sum reqired would be over "$ 1 Million". There is no published on line catalogue that I am aware of. I have seen the DVD. It is impressive.

Bob Faris' collection was was beyond words.........
The experimentals, trials and one of a kind items that Bob had were just amazing......
It should have gone to a museum or public gallery but that is a long story.
I think the MG's have all gone but the conventional kit is beyond believe.
How does one get a copy of the listing ???

Where are you? I may be able to post a DVD. Will check to see if there would be any objection to the contents being posted on this site if someone could handle the technical bit.
