    Upper Band Reassembly

Rank Enfield newbie here. Have a '44 #4 Mk1* Long Branch. Took the upper band off to inspect the barrel. Now reassembling.

Read enough to get myself in trouble, one admonition advised not to stretch the band to get it back on or it may fracture. So now being ginger and the band does not want to 'easily' go over the ears of the sight protector. Is there a 1,2,3 std procedure or does one just get a bigger hammer? The latter is not my first choice.

Following that thought, is there an Armorer's reference or handy tips/hints I haven't found on here yet. Hours of excellent information available, but not finding a quick answer in print.

    Thanks much.

    :-)

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. Perhaps download a complete set of manuals for the Lee Enfield, which includes operating and armourer's maintenance instructions.

The manuals may be found in the Technical Articles for Milsurp Collectors and Re-loaders (click here)

2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Manuals (click here)

    Complete Set includes:

    - 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Data Summary
    - 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Parts Identification List
    - 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Operating Instructions
    - 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Equipment Description
    - 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Maintenance Instructions

1991 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Manuals (click here)

    Complete Set includes:

    - 1991 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Operating Instructions
    - 1991 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Maintenance Instructions

Note: The difference between the 1991 set of No.4 Manuals and 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Manuals, is that the 1991 manual contains armourer's information on how to properly "bed" the No.4 rifle, whereas the newer 2002 manual does not.

    Hope this helps...

    Regards,
    Doug

Ahhhh... now that looks and seems logical. Didn't realize it came off. Took it as all one piece. Got it. Thanks, Steve. :-)

sammass: It doesn't hurt to slap a little grease over the front ends of the forend and upper handguard as well. Helps avoid scratches.
